"Vellichor" captures the nostalgic and wistful atmosphere of used bookstores, a concept defined by John Koenig in "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows." Infused with the passage of time, bookstores evoke a sense of longing and reflection. The bittersweet realization that one will never have enough time to read all desired books amplified a profound sense of longing and unfulfilled curiosity. Each book is locked in its own era, bound and dated like an old room the author abandoned years ago, a hidden annex of thoughts left just as they were on the day they were captured. Each book is a doorway to an era long past, evoking a deep melancholy and reflecting on lives we'll never know.
The painting features a faceless profile beneath an orange moon that divides the day and night sky, symbolizing time. A large eye with a green iris and red eyelashes transform into the hands of an unwinding clock, connecting the figure to history and memory. Angular, multicolored stripes suggest abstracted bookshelves, evoking contemplation and introspection. The piece merges abstract and surrealist art, reflecting the strange wistfulness of vellichor.
