Sandra Mack-Valencia

Artist Statement

I am a painter who loves color, patterns, and stories.

I grew up in Colombia, listening to fairy tales and urban legends that translate into the narrative aspect of my work. I now live and work in New York where I find inspiration from many sources: vintage photos, literature, films, fashion, etc. I often combine photographic transfer with painting. Photography references both reality and memory, while painting allows me to bring an intuitive response to both materials and process.

I have developed a wide range of painting series such as queens, landscapes, animals, circus characters, candelabras etc. Although different in content, they share a feeling of magical realism, as well as my love for storytelling.

My work has been exhibited in museums such as El Museo del Barrio and the Coney Island Museum in New York, as well as the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Museo MAJA in Medellín. My paintings have traveled to Colombia, Amsterdam, Japan and Italy, where I was part of a public space project through OffSite/ArtBridge.

The search for beauty is an essential part of my work, which I understand not only as an aesthetic pleasure but also and above all as a critical commitment that can bring people together.
