Khary Darby recalls a childhood filled with a constant obsession with drawing, which later evolved into a focused interest in painting, inspired by an early introduction to art history. As a teenager, he frequented libraries, hunting for books on art and poetry, where he was particularly struck by the works of Titian and Caravaggio. The violent compositions and immediacy of expression in their paintings left a lasting impression on him. Khary's fascination with the psychological aspects of art led him to study painting at the Edna Manley College of the Visual Arts in Kingston, graduating in 2001. He interned with the curatorial department of the National Gallery of Jamaica, maintaining a studio in downtown Kingston. His work has been exhibited in Jamaica, the Caribbean, and the UK, and he completed an extended residency in downtown Kingston in 2011, contributing to the urban reinvigoration campaign by transforming disused spaces into contemporary art venues.
