Artist Biography

Ellen Cherriman is a 21-year-old contemporary figurative artist from West Sussex, United Kingdom, who has previously exhibited her work in London, Paris, Madrid and Venice.

Her work is deeply influenced by some of her own experiences and the inspiration of artists such as, Alex Kanevsky, Dame Tracey Emin, Jenny Saville and Iryna Yermolova. She aims to capture the essence of the human condition, exploring themes of trauma, domestic relationships, and female sexuality through my art.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice draws upon my understanding of psychological theory to explore inner, and often hidden layers of human experience. My figurative work engages with profound psychological themes of trauma, domestic relationships, female sexuality, and societal taboos - essential dialogues in artworld and beyond. Each piece begins with a deep immersion in personal narratives, whether from my own experiences or broader. The initial drawing serves as a form of introspection, allowing me to access complex emotions that I then translate into visual form through layers of rich colour and expressive brushstrokes.

In a contemporary context, my work serves as a dialogue exploring key issues that are often overlooked or stigmatised. By exploring themes such as domestic relationships, trauma and the expression of female sexuality, I confront these uncomfortable topics, urging viewers to question societal norms and promote conversation. My art resonates with modern movements that seek to dismantle stigma around mental health and reclaim female agency. The tension between vulnerability and strength, the weight of social expectations, and the resilience that arises from confronting inner pain are central to my work. Ultimately, my art aspires to empower by highlighting the complexities of womanhood and the nuances of human connection.
