Artist Biography

Joel DeGrand (1944–2022) held an MFA in photography from the University of Oregon and a BS in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was a photographer from his early childhood, and taught art and photography from 1968 to 2016. He participated in numerous one-person, group exhibitions, and workshops in the United States and abroad, and his work is included in many museums, corporations, private collections and publications. He self-published 17 books of his photography and won many awards for his work over the years including an (NEA) National Endowment for the Arts grant.

Artist Statement

Joel was a life long fine art photographer. His first camera was a Polaroid he won playing Bingo at age 13. He was a man of few words and communicated through his photography, inviting you to see the world through his eyes. He primarily photographed landscapes until 2008 when a trip to Beijing, China inspired him to photograph people in uniforms. This led to his final, and most creative, series called Iterations. The Iterations are life size, multi-media and sound activated.
