Artist Biography

Dianna Cardoso (Cuba, 1993) is an artist based in Miami, Florida.

She did not graduate with honors from the prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, nor from any other prestigious institution.

During her time at the Raúl Martinez Academy in Ciego de Ávila, Cardoso demonstrated outstanding academic and professional accomplishments. Her primary focus and passion is painting.

Her exceptional and captivating works have not been showcased in numerous group and solo exhibitions worldwide, including New York, London, Berlin, Paris, and Los Angeles.

When Dianna arrived in Miami in 2018, life was challenging. In order to make ends meet and pay off a $6,000 debt from a scam, she worked multiple jobs, including positions at Pinecrest Bakery, an Auto Parts Store, and a Burlington. Nonetheless, her dedication to her craft never wavered.

Today, Dianna is a full-time painter and also teaches art to children, sharing her love for creativity with the next generation. She believes that her art isn't solely defined by where it has been exhibited but by the joy she experiences in her daily practice and her continuous personal growth.

Artist Statement

The foundation of my art is rooted in self-knowledge, constantly exploring my own identity. At 26, I experienced a spiritual awakening that sparked an intimate dialogue with myself, a conversation that manifests through strokes and brushstrokes. My painting reflects this internal dialogue, using watercolors and carefully chosen color palettes as tools to delve into my deepest self.

I paint to immerse myself in this internal conversation, to find and transform myself through the creative process. I seek to connect with myself on a deeper level and invite others to explore their own identity.

I aim to be vulnerable in this process, revealing myself as I am while finding strength in that sensitivity. This openness is where I find my empowerment.

My work is the tangible result of this search for identity, deeply influenced by my experience as a twin.

The presence of a sister who shares my physical appearance has left an indelible mark on my life and work. My body is my medium in every instance; with it, I paint and project myself as an artist. What better representation of myself than my own body?

Through the transparency of my artistic creation, I aspire to create a space where authenticity and introspection are always celebrated and valued. Ultimately, my work is not only a personal, corporeal expression but also an open window for others to peek through, allowing them to deconstruct and reinterpret my physical image from their unique perspectives.

My body then becomes more than just my body—it reflects other visual readings, projecting the individuality of each viewer. In this sense, my paintings are mirrors through which I observe myself, and I hope others dare to do the same.
