BIOGRAPHY
Denise Jones Adler (b. 1953, Bronx) is a multi-media collage-based artist who transforms detritus from our world into otherworldly scenes and creations. Having studied with artist Juanita McNeely in the 1970s, and influenced by the Feminist art movement, Denise creates worlds of feminine escapism. She has been active in the New York art scene since the 80s and was a founding member of the Cultural Guerrillas group. During the Pandemic, she co-founded ArtSpeak Collective, leading to the establishment of Pictor Gallery in Chelsea, NY, where she serves as the Director.
Artist Statement
“I am an artist because I have always loved the process of creating. My work is both personal and archetypical and seeks to memorialize a moment in time, the fragile nature of life, and the emotional impact of the past on the present. My portraits and dreamscapes pinpoint my unsettled view of the world with a subtle sense of amusement and innate feminism. I set out to create work that expresses the mythic and legendary. Magazines, photographs, and found materials become the story within the story, tying our world to the dreamscapes I create. Influenced by the Feminist Art Movement, Expressionism, and Dada movement, my collages reflect these inspirations.”
