They thought it was the last time

Artist Statement

Come on in. Sense how the natural world feels - simultaneously flowing and jagged, and always transforming. The energetic marks alternate between thrusts of motion and moments of rest. The unending push/pull we feel in life.

There is repetition but the marks are not the same; iterations grow and develop from each other until they are altogether different. The strokes of ink are eager to finally share their personal histories but get crowded out by the next stroke, a new story. They urgently ask - will you hear me? Witness my journey?

Sections of the piece tell small stories of what might have happened in that place: who came first, what was lost over time, the struggles and harmonies among them. The overlapping marks envelop the viewer with a feeling of both unease and calm by flattening a period of time into a single image on a page. They shout and whisper their stories to you.

With so much happening all at once, what else is there to do but stand still and feel it?
