Artist Biography

Nayanaa Kanodia, born in Pune, Maharashtra, in 1950, is an economist-turned-artist celebrated for pioneering L’Art Naïf (Naïve Art) in India. Despite earning an Honours Degree in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi, in 1969, her passion for art led her to pursue painting. Largely self-taught, she honed her skills under the guidance of renowned contemporary artist Anjolie Ela Menon.

Kanodia’s art is a vibrant exploration of everyday life, capturing the charm and idiosyncrasies of ordinary people and urban settings. Her signature style is marked by bold colors, intricate detailing, and polished, flattened surfaces, creating a whimsical yet deeply relatable world. Infused with humor and nostalgia, her work reflects the cultural shifts within Indian society while preserving traditional narratives.

Since her debut solo exhibition in Mumbai in 1986, Kanodia’s work has been widely exhibited in India and internationally. In 1998, she held a solo show at the Commonwealth Institute in London, and in 2001, her works were displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey. Her paintings are part of esteemed public and private collections, including the Musée International d’Art Naïf in Paris.
