BIOGRAPHY
Nancy Breakstone, an award-winning photographer residing in Westport, Connecticut, has developed a career capturing the essence of the world through her lens. Her artistic journey began in 1961 when she received a Kodak Brownie camera as a gift. This simple act ignited her passion for photography, opening her eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. With a deep connection to the water, Nancy has spent a significant portion of her life engaged in various water sports. As a former competitor in windsurfing, sailing, and stand up paddle boarding, she has developed an intimate relationship with the beach and the ocean. This connection and love for these environments are showcased in her photographs. One notable theme in Nancy's photography is her portrayal of sea glass. Over the course of 50 years, she has traversed different beaches worldwide, collecting sea glass and incorporating it into her art. Through these images, Nancy conveys the magical allure and beauty of these translucent gems, highlighting their unique colors, shapes, and textures.
Additionally, Nancy’s work goes beyond aesthetics. She uses her talent to draw attention to important issues, one of which is the plight of ocean coral reefs. Nancy collects fragments of dead coral from Caribbean shorelines, aiming to start conversations about the challenges facing these delicate ecosystems. By photographing these fragments, she brings awareness to the urgent need for conservation and preservation efforts. Her photography is characterized by her eye for detail, her ability to capture the essence of the ocean, and her dedication to using her art as a platform for change. Her images evoke a sense of wonder, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty of our natural world while also calling attention to the environmental issues that threaten it.
