Artist Statement

(THROUGH THE ACT OF PAINTING, THE PAINTING ITSELF HAPPENS.)
My work is a balance of intention and chance—control versus surrender. Allowing a painting to develop, collaborating with the creative process rather than directing it, is the heart of my painting practice. If there is an overarching theme to my work, then it is about letting go; letting go of expectations, rules, desire, and fear. It requires a leap of faith, a willingness to fail, and a belief that the simple act of mixing paint and slathering it onto a canvas will eventually turn into something that touches truth.

Inspired by global events, personal moments, human relationships, and happenstances that I observe, my work is an attempt to visually capture how daily life feels to people who are living in the world of today. As we collectively move through a challenging period of history, I feel that it is important to pay attention to details and notice the things that may easily be lost in the clamor of our everyday experience. I hope that my work will serve as documentation of this time.

Thoughtful abstract compositions invite creative thinking and more meaningful interactions with others. By showing up and being present to my own artistic practice, I feel connected to an authenticity that is bigger than myself. By sharing my work with others, I hope to inspire conversation that goes beyond image.
