Description

The sea regurgitates man made objects. It leaves them on the beach polished and beautifully entangled for me to find. I take them home to my studio in Reykjavik and pair them against half forgotten and abandoned ideas. And suddenly everything fits.
On my walks I usually pick up trash and as an artist I am trying to buy less, make use of what I already have at my studio. Here it all started with a found piece of hollow foam.

Artist Biography

Rósa Sigrún Jónsdóttir graduated from the Teaching University of Iceland in 1987 and then The Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2001. She has held many solo exhibitions in Iceland and abroad and participated in a multitude of group exhibitions. Some recent exhibitions include The National Gallery of Iceland and Reykjavík Art Museum, LÁ Art Museum, The Metropolitan Arts Center in Belfast ( The MAC ), Art Stays festival in Slovenia, Kajaani Art Museum in Finland and Cartavetra gallery in Florence. In those settings Rósa´s work has mainly been based on textile related installations and sculptures. Rósa served as chair of the Reykjavík Association of Sculptors for four years, in addition to being the Association of Iceland Visual Artist´s ( SÍM ) representative on the Public Buildings Art Fund.

Artist Statement

I like using slow process technique like knitting, crochet and collage. I´m, on one hand celebrating my mother’s craft tradition by taking it further, and bringing out the endless possibilities of the thread. On the other hand I´m also, by basing my work on traditional crafts, sort of resisting all the speed around me and spreading my beliefs in the meditative and healing powers of art.
