BIOGRAPHY
Iain Cadby is an English artist and designer known for his text and image-based street art posters. His large-scale artworks can often be found on the walls of Soho in London. Born in 1970 in London, Iain was encouraged to pursue art by his Cartier jewellery designer father and painter mother. After completing a Master's at Central St. Martins College of Art, he collaborated with Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, designing books and posters for renowned artists like Ron English and Invader. His street art, created under the pseudonym SMiLE, blends playful and dark elements, akin to the social commentary of 1980s New York artists Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger. Iain has since shifted to creating screen prints with London's premier printmakers.
Artist Statement
I started making street art out of frustration with the constant brainwashing and propaganda we are bombarded with every day. Over time, I had a realization that I had to do something about it myself. My artwork evolved from text-based to purely image-based aesthetics. While the large texts may not always be present, I frequently use symbols and small details to link my street art’s social commentary with my fine art. Though the aesthetics differ, the underlying messages remain the same. The act of making both socially aware street art and fine art without an overt message is equally liberating, each having its place.
