The painting titled ‘Jonah, Where’s That Boat Going’ by Eddie McClure is an abstract expressionist work that conveys a strong emotional intensity through its bold use of color and gestural brushstrokes. The canvas is dominated by deep reds and magentas, creating a sense of depth and passion. These warm tones are contrasted by areas of cool blue and stark white, which add visual tension and focus to the piece.
The brushwork is dynamic and appears to be applied with vigorous movement, as evidenced by the sweeping lines and broad strokes that traverse the canvas. This energetic application of paint suggests a spontaneity and a release of emotion from the artist. The composition has an almost stormy atmosphere, with the white and blue areas resembling the tumultuous sea or a churning sky, possibly alluding to the biblical narrative of Jonah.
There are visible drips and splatters that contribute to the painting's raw, unfinished quality, emphasizing the action painting aspect of McClure's technique. The layering of colors, the textural variations, and the apparent speed of execution all serve to create a work that is visually arresting and emotionally charged.
The title of the piece, ‘Jonah, Where’s That Boat Going,’ invites viewers to search for narrative elements within the abstract forms, perhaps seeing the white expanses as the surging waves of the sea from the story of Jonah and the Whale. It also raises questions about direction and destiny, themes that are intrinsic to the tale of Jonah.
Overall, this painting by Eddie McClure is a powerful visual experience that combines abstract expressionism with thematic storytelling, resulting in a piece that is open to interpretation and rich in both visual and emotional content.

BIOGRAPHY
Hi my name is Eddie McClure, I am based on the gulf coast of Florida, and I do my best to participate in creation. “Self taught” with formal experience, I’ve spent the past 2 decades either working in creative fields or holding a close personal creative expression as a passion. Over the years I’ve found painting to be a place of repose and the most accurate medium to convey and share my multi-sensory experience as well personal commentaries.
Artist Statement: I look to create paintings that are eclectic, colorful, and inspiring. utilizing rhythmic markings, obstructed patterns, vintage ephemera, and transparent mediums to bring subjectivity into visual form. I hope to invoke introspection and personal reflection in the people that see my works. A doorway for them to lead themselves instead of me saying where they should go.
