"January Evening" by David Dunleavy is a visually striking piece composed of hand-cut strips of card stock arranged in a precise, horizontal manner. The artwork displays a gradient transition of colors, ranging from deep purples at the top, descending through shades of magenta, and culminating in vibrant pinks at the bottom.
This careful arrangement of colors mimics the subtle gradations of the sky during a January evening, with the cool purples suggesting the lingering dusk while the warm pinks hint at the last traces of sunset. The uniformity of the strips and the sharpness of their edges provide a structured, almost architectural framework that contrasts with the fluidity of natural dusk.
The piece is framed within a white border, which further accentuates the vividness of the colors and adds a sense of depth, as if the viewer is looking through a window into the twilight. The simplicity of the frame focuses the viewer's attention on the meticulous detail and precision of the hand-cut card stock.
Dunleavy's work here is not only a testament to the beauty of the natural world but also an exploration of the interplay between color, repetition, and form. "January Evening" is both a literal and abstract representation, inviting viewers to appreciate the gradient as a natural phenomenon and as a feat of artistic discipline and vision.

Married to the wonderful Wesley who gives me room to explore all the tangents. Together we are amazed and delighted on a daily basis with our beautiful daughters. Originally from Galway on the wild west coast of Ireland, I now live in Los Angeles. My friends would say I'm the last person to have a creative artistic side but I've been a non-practicing artist all my life. My engineering mind informs the construction of my 3-dimensional and highly textured paper art pieces. It has me taken a long time to share my work; I hope you enjoy it!
