Artist Biography

Kahori Kamiya is a Japanese-born artist who relocated to New York, where she earned her second MFA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts. Currently residing and working in Rockland County, NY, Kamiya's work spans sculpture, painting, video, and performance, deeply drawing from her heritage and personal experiences.

Kamiya has completed residencies at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), ChaNorth, and Prospect Gallery sponsored by Prospect City in Australia. Her work has been recognized with grants and awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Arts Westchester, Puffin Foundation, Hudson Valley MOCA, Center on Contemporary Art, and Kitano Foundation. Her projects have been supported by organizations including the Brooklyn Arts Council, Flux Factory, and The Arts Council of Rockland.

Kamiya’s NY debut solo show "Long Eclipse" at Amos Eno Gallery in 2023received critical acclaim from Hyperallergic, Art Spiel, among others. Her exhibitions include SPRING/BREAK Art Show, the 14th Media Art Biennale Alternative Now in Poland, Dumbo Art Festival, Pärnu International Film & Video Festival in Estonia, and Oculus Westfield World Trade Center in New York. Her works are part of public and private collections in Japan, the UK, Israel, Sweden, and the US.

Artist Statement

My work reflects my journey to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary themes. Through my sculptures and paintings, I explore the dynamic interplay between natural and spiritual elements, which are central to my artistic practice. The fluid and organic forms within my compositions evoke a sense of movement and vitality, while the geometric patterns and mysterious creatures add layers of meaning and depth.

I prefer to keep my color palette delicate, ethereal, and timeless. I explore the balance between figuration and abstraction, using my hypersensitivity and Reiki healing knowledge to express my awareness of vibrations, energy, and spirits around me. In Japan, people grow up with the idea of "Yorozu-no-Kami," meaning "Countless Gods" in English. This term is often used in Shinto to refer to the numerous deities believed to inhabit various aspects of nature and life.

Caves and trees often serve as backgrounds and fascinating motifs in my work. The subjects often come from my memories, especially quiet times that deeply connect me with nature and its supernatural power, like a full moon night. By keeping the figures not obvious, I aim to convey a sense of invisible existence that I especially feel while hiking in the deep woods or during late quiet nights.
