Artist Biography

Alex Devereux is an artist with a background in Graphic Design and Fine Art. He was born in Elmhurst, Illinois, and raised in the Northern suburbs of Chicago. From a young age, he had a strong interest in drawing and painting, as well as a fascination with Vintage/Retro Americana, which would later become the defining theme of his artistic body of work.

He began his formal artistic education at The American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he studied Graphic Design with a focus on Illustration. He earned his Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from the academy.

It was during a college project that Alex visited a local junkyard to photograph a rusted-out 1956 Buick. This photograph served as the inspiration for his first painting, marking the beginning of his photorealism journey. While he experimented with various mediums such as pencil, colored pencil, and watercolor, he found Acrylic to be the most effective medium in achieving the photorealistic look he desired.

At some point, Alex moved his studio from Chicago to Florida, where he now balances a career in Graphic Design with a strong concentration on Fine Art. His paintings have been showcased in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago and Arizona, and his work has found its way into numerous private collections across the country.

Currently, Alex resides in Northern Florida with his wife and three children. With his passion for Vintage/Retro Americana and expertise in photorealism, he continues to create compelling artworks that captivate audiences and collectors alike.

Artist Statement

In my paintings, I embark on a journey to explore the overlooked and underappreciated aspects of contemporary objects and locations. I am captivated by the hidden beauty and significance found in the ordinary, everyday subjects that often go unnoticed. Through my art, I seek to unveil the compelling subtleties that surround us, encouraging a newfound appreciation for the unexamined details of time and place.

A recurring theme in my work revolves around the rural American landscape, which becomes a canvas for conveying a profound sense of quiet pathos. I am drawn to the emotions evoked by scenes of abandonment and decay, meticulously capturing the essence of rundown gas stations, lifeless general stores, weathered signage, and sprawling railroad yards. These still images serve as poignant reflections of the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of human existence.

To illuminate the simplicity and depth of my landscapes, I play with a range of lighting techniques, from lurid neon to incandescent urban glare. Through these variations of atmospheric and artificial lighting, I accentuate the subtle nuances that lie within the scenes, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the tranquil ambiance of my art.

My artistic process is driven by a desire to evoke contemplation and introspection in those who engage with my paintings. By shedding light on the often overlooked aspects of our surroundings, I hope to encourage viewers to find beauty in unexpected places and develop a deeper connection with the world around them.

Ultimately, my art serves as a visual ode to the ordinary, an invitation to slow down and appreciate the profound stories that unfold within the seemingly mundane. In the quietude of my paintings, I strive to capture a timeless and universal essence, reminding us all of the intrinsic value that lies within the insignificance of contemporary objects and locations.
