Artist Statement

I was always drawn to primitive art. "How", I would wonder, "can these primitive artists keep their work so simple with a singular focus?" I could never accomplish that feeling of simplicity. My training background included attending a renowned New York City art school.

Then, in 1992, it hit me. I would attempt to unlearn my painting skills and learn to work in a different way--like a primitive artist. I had to see and think like an outsider, someone who creates from their gut, with no art education.

I began by working with my left hand just to get down the essence of my idea. Being right handed and tending to over think everything, this was not an easy task.

Today I consider myself an anti-technology painter. I paint on recycled wood, incorporating found objects that are aesthetically interesting and help me tell a story. I am constantly searching the streets for objects to use in my paintings. This adds dimension to my work and gives it a naive feeling.

My art is about the human condition; and, therefore, the figurative images are essential to telling the story. My goal is for viewers to engage with my work through a visually primitive and emotional lens.
