The summer of 2022 was very dry. In some parts of Italy and Spain there was a drought. Here, in Southern France, there was no rain and the rushing river slowed down to a trickle. Water pooled around stones, exposing the lower parts of boulders that tumbled who knows how long ago from the ancient ridge above. I could easily hop from rock to rock and place myself at the center of the timid current, in a cozy spot that soon became a favorite of mine. I would sit there, dipping my feet in a deep-ish pool of icy water and look around. Life and death were supported by this extreme weather. Bugs skidded on the surface of the water, bubbles of espresso colored foam floated on top of some of the smaller pools, swampy green blotches on others. Birds chased the bugs, so did iridescent dragonflies, dried out trees adorned the scene like vertical gold strokes, smeared across the landscape, and horizontal, circular gray-blue lines of past currents outlined the exposed rock face as summer advanced and the water level kept receding.
