Artist Biography

Paula DeStefanis is an American artist known for her intricate abstract paintings. Utilizing both acrylic and oil, she skillfully employs techniques of repetition and layering to explore themes of time, duration, and transformation. Her creative process fosters a comprehensive examination of concepts from multiple perspectives. Her work celebrates the tactile and emotional dimensions of each medium.

Recently, Paula retired from her roles at the North Shore Academy of the Arts and the Arts Mill, where she was a vibrant part of the arts community. As the Founder and Director, she spearheaded art and educational programs for both institutions, along with curating and managing exhibitions. She still maintains a studio at The Arts Mill.

With over 35 years of experience as a practicing artist, Paula splits her time between her studios in the US and the UK. Her artwork is displayed in galleries across the Midwest, as well as in corporate and private collections worldwide.

Artist Statement

My artwork honors the intersection of past and present, the imagined and the real, the forgotten and the lasting. I am captivated by the physical transformation and evidence of time's passage. I find particular intrigue in the patinas that develop where architectural forms interact with atmospheric elements, revealing a history marked by shifting colors and textures. These surfaces, whether purposely crafted or naturally evolved, resonate both visually and poetically in my paintings.

Ancestral influences significantly shape my art, stemming from my deep appreciation for Italy's textured history. My journeys through Italy have unveiled a rich tapestry of imagery where ancient masterpieces blend with contemporary street culture. This harmonious fusion of the past and present, memory and creativity, profoundly impacts my artistic vision. While the weathered walls and fading frescoes of Italy inspire me, I also draw artistic influence from everyday urban landscapes. With a lifelong commitment to the arts, I am compelled to explore the theme of age in culture and creativity. As I mature, my goal is to express the experience of being a woman who has dedicated her life to others, now seeking to channel my art into my own personal journey.

Ultimately, my work is a reflection on the human experience, a celebration of our collective heritage, and an invitation to discover beauty within the imperfections and transformations that time brings. Through my creations, I aspire to remind others that every mark, every faded hue, and every weathered surface tells a story worth hearing.
