Stuart Franklin studied painting and drawing in the UK under Leonard McComb RA during the 1970s. Later he studied photography and film, and later still completed a BA and doctoral degree (DPhil) at the University of Oxford. Much of his career has been established in the world of photography (see Wikipedia page). He has exhibited widely, most recently in Vienna, Austria in 2024, and he has published 11 books. However, since 2017, with a new studio in Gozo, Malta, he has refocused on painting and drawing.
Artist Statement
Stuart Franklin's work is driven by subjects that inspire him, often in the surroundings of his home in Malta, but also further afield, with subjects drawn from (for example) time spent on the border between Ukraine and Romania as refugees fled their homes at the start of the war in 2022; time spent in Cambodia, Mexico, Italy, Spain and UK - the tree series; and most recently in Thailand. An abiding interest is in the relationship between nature and society.
