Artist Statement
Whilst studying for his degree St.John learned that there was so much more to photography than just pointing and shooting with a camera. Rather than relying on shop bought cameras he was challenged to try and design and build his own cameras. Often these cameras were made from found objects.
Not only was there the question of what makes a camera, but also what happens to the camera as you take the photograph? And then there were also questions of what happens during the processing. In short the whole process of taking a photograph did not have to be defined by a linear procedure of A follows B follows C process. The key was to be inquisitive.
After completing his degree St.John continued to design and build cameras. It is after moving back to South Africa that he started to explore other areas of art making. This included making sculptures and installations.
