Sol Hill

Sol Hill’s parents opened the first contemporary art gallery in Santa Fe, NM. His early memories were of his parents in their studios and Hill’s Gallery. The mysterious objects that pervaded the gallery intrigued him. Seeing those artworks felt like observing some secret alchemical language that young Hill wanted to learn.

Sol Hill grew up in 9 states in every corner of the United States, Jamaica, and Germany. However, he always had one parent in Santa Fe. He married a Brazilian and has traveling to Brazil regularly for 20+ years. His parents belong to different classes, one wealthy and one poor. Belonging was always a challenge, but the broad perspective of places and people has steeped deeply into his perspective and fuels Hill’s artistic point of view.

Although he majored in International Relations, Hill returned to the arts after an intense medical crisis. He earned an MFA in photographic art at Brooks Institute and has been working full-time as an artist since 2010, still seeking to decipher that alchemical language or at least to invent his own.

To this end, Hill uses camera sensors to record the energetic thumbprint of the universe and renders the interference data, called digital noise, into a visual language that expresses his wonder at the fundamentally immaterial nature of our universe. He calls his work Metagraphs because, like a photograph, they are a recording but of much more than just visible light. His goal is to make work that explores the space where art, science, and spirituality intersect.

“I aim to provide a hole in ordinary perception to allow the viewer to see through the veils of habitual seeing.”

Artist Statement

I use digital camera sensors to record the energetic fingerprint of our universe to explore the overlapping intersections of art, science, and spirituality. A camera is designed to record visible light; however, a digital sensor only sees energy, which I exploit to force it to record much more energy than we can see. Finding connections between my spiritual seeking and thirst for scientific discovery has become a way for me to build a personal bridge of legitimacy that validates both paths of knowledge and ultimately points to the same great mystery. This is the message of my art.

My works, which I call Metagraphs, are not mere recordings of visible light. They are vibrant manifestations of the energetic soup we inhabit. I transform the artifacts resulting from digital noise into a new visual experience, a visual kaleidoscope of color and texture. This abstracts the image and reveals aspects of reality we do not see, metaphorically and literally. The image is transformed into a hyper-vision that transcends the boundaries of normal perception.
