Chibuike Ifedilichukwu
Chibuike Ifedilichukwu (b. 1986) Akwaeze, Anambra Nigerian, whose work spans mixed media, installation, performance art and photography. Deeply influenced by his grandmother, Asamma, Chibuike’s art reflects her eco-conscious values and the Igbo philosophy, “onye bili, ibe ya bili” (“live and let live”). This philosophy, instilled in him during childhood, fosters his vision as an environmental artist, recognizing value in discarded materials and transforming them into powerful expressions of sustainability and hope.
In 2021, Chibuike pioneered 'Ikapnka' a unique technique, weaving mats with discarded aluminum and plastic as canvases inspired by traditional weaving of Ikpankata, Ugbahi, and Ute in Igbo culture before creating the subject on it. This innovative approach is central to his mission of environmental advocacy through art.
In 2024, his pieces “Asamma” and “Choke” were selected by the Educational Testing Service, on behalf of the National Center for Education Statistics, for use in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) program in the United States, showcasing his work in an educational context and underscoring his impact as an artist dedicated to sustainability and cultural heritage.
In 2023, Chibuike won Middle East& Africa, Global Art for Change Prize, M&Saatchi Londom United Kingdom. In 2018 Overall Winner, Twilight, Life in My City Art Festival, Enugu Nigerian and in 2017 First Winner, Recycle Art Competition Sterling Bank Plc, Lagos Nigeria.
Artist Statement
I am interested in the industrial and human activities that generate daily waste with little or no thought to the effect it has on the ecosystem. My works reveal the aesthetic and value potential of waste materials and endless possibilities to transform objects and create fresh hope for these objects. However, through the process of scavenging waste, I interpret the message of physical, environmental and social consciousness through mixed media, installation and performing arts which embody natural colours, textures and forms. My goal is to build human equilibrium ecology by recreating waste objects like plastic packaging strap, aluminium and copper wire
I use plastic packaging strap, aluminium and copper wire to create mat as canvas, with the process of weft, warp and stitch which describes the inseparable covenant between human and global existence without inflicting pain on the human environment or its inhabitants. Therefore, the artistic representation and value embedded in my creative process seek to inform the endless possibilities of waste and I do hope that my audience could perceive my work as a symbol of hope.
