Sovina Vernon-White is a contemporary artist who lives and works in London. Originally from a sleepy village in Nottinghamshire, Sovina learned to navigate discriminatory spaces within her village, where art became her voice when words were insufficient. A self-taught artist, she realized her abilities around the age of 11, gaining positive attention from friends and family through her art. Despite her passion, she pursued a career as a chartered surveyor, relegating art to a hobby for many years. The global events of Covid and BLM reignited her commitment to art, drawing inspiration from historical events and current affairs. Sovina believes art is a crucial medium for recording lives and interactions, using her paintings to express events much like a poet uses words.
