Renata Fernandez was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1971 and has been based in London since 2003. Her educational background includes Fine Arts from IUESAPAR (1991-96), Social Sciences and Media Studies from UCAB (1988-1993), and Drama and Set Design from AGO TEATRO (1990-95) in Caracas, Venezuela. She also completed a Professional Practice course at the Contemporary Art Academy (Xavier Ellis & Mathew Gibson’s educational project) from 2022-2023. Her work delves into themes of immigration, territory, identity, and displacement, using these societal issues as potent sources of inspiration and contemplation. Through a multidisciplinary and self-referential approach, Fernandez weaves together a reconstructed memory of landscapes and inhabited spaces, employing a static narrative where monster-like plants and outdoor furniture act as signifiers.
