Born on October 3, 1945, in Germany, Martin Giesen began painting at the age of 15. He pursued art history at Heidelberg University and interned at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from 1970 to 1971, completing his PhD at Universität Heidelberg in 1973. With a career in university teaching, Giesen has taught the history of art and architecture in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the UAE, where he was the founding dean of the School of Architecture & Design at the American University of Sharjah. For over 40 years, he has produced and exhibited watercolor paintings that document the impact of development on the environment. His work during Lebanon's civil war received critical acclaim, and his paintings have been exhibited in solo shows in Lebanon, Germany, Canada, and the UAE. Now retired, Giesen resides on the island of Cyprus.
