Darin Darby was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and is a self-taught visual artist. His artistic journey began with drawing comic book characters using pencils. In his early twenties, he expanded his repertoire to include colored pencils, charcoal, pastels, and acrylic paint. In 2014, Darin created a new art technique, trademarked as Laypuzzim® (layered puzzled image). This innovative technique involves cutting textured card stock paper, mat board, leather, or wood, with each color of the artwork cut out by hand, layered, and puzzled together to create an image using negative space. Darin's art has been exhibited in galleries across Metro Detroit, Ohio, Chicago, and Kentucky, and is part of permanent collections at Henry Ford Hospital in Jackson, MI, the Dayton Art Institute, and the Detroit Historical Museum. His work is inspired by childhood memories, biblical themes, thought-provoking messages, and uncredited historical black figures. Darin is passionate about creating artwork that conveys a message and sparks meaningful conversations, continually reinventing himself by experimenting with different materials and textiles.
