Article: A Visual Storyteller of Negrense Heritage

A Visual Storyteller of Negrense Heritage

A Visual Storyteller of Negrense Heritage

In the heart of Silay City, known as the "Paris of Negros" for its well-preserved heritage houses and vibrant cultural scene, thrives a remarkable visual artist—Aeson Baldevia. Aeson wears many hats as an image-maker, seamlessly blending travel, commercial, documentary, and fine art photography. With a portfolio that has graced galleries across Switzerland, Belgium, London, South Korea, and Germany, he continues to elevate Negrense artistry on a global stage.

A Remarkable Journey from Early Triumphs

Aeson Baldevia’s journey into the world of photography began at an impressively young age. At just 14, he clinched the first runner-up position at the Negros Environment Week photo contest, competing against seasoned professionals more than twice his age. This early success fueled his passion for visual storytelling.

He pursued Liberal Arts and Commerce at the University of St. La Salle, majoring in AB Communications and BS Marketing. His time at the university was nothing short of prolific. He became the first and only four-time recipient of the prestigious Corps d’Elite Award for visual arts. Aeson’s exceptional ability to capture moments earned him accolades such as Best Campus Photoblogger and Campus Photojournalist in Western Visayas.

A Historian’s Eye for Cultural Preservation

Baldevia’s work reveals a deep instinct for cultural preservation. His keen sensitivity to the fleeting nature of cultural heritage led him to document the indigenous Panay Bukidnon community in his acclaimed series, Antes Sanda Madura / Before They Are Gone. This compelling visual homage earned him international recognition as the lone Filipino finalist for the Celeste Prize in London in 2017.

This commitment to storytelling through photography extends to his other notable works, such as Ato Bala for Art Fair 2023 and Whispers of Light: A Homage to Félix Laureano for Viva EXCON 2023. His series Para Sa Pumapasada: A Tribute to the Filipino Jeepney further showcases his empathy and respect for everyday Filipino life, capturing the essence of resilience and dignity.

Recognition on the International Stage

Baldevia’s photographic talent has garnered international acclaim. His entry Look Up won third place at the 2019 FIBA International Photo Contest and was prominently displayed at the House of Basketball in Switzerland. This achievement stands as a testament to his ability to capture compelling narratives that transcend cultural boundaries.

Prolific Collaborations and Artistic Residencies

In 2018, Aeson made his gallery debut with Orange Project’s group exhibition Cycles 003, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the contemporary art gallery. His participation in the Majica artist residency, a joint venture between Orange Project and Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig, further cemented his reputation as a formidable creative force.

During this 40-day residency in Leipzig, Aeson produced two photo books—From Point A to Point B and Midpoints Matter—which reflect his contemplative approach to visual storytelling.

Empathy Through the Lens

Aeson Baldevia’s first solo exhibit, Chance Encounters, currently showing at Orange Project, exemplifies his fine art photography. The exhibit is a poignant exploration of empathy, capturing fleeting moments that resonate deeply with human emotion and connection.

The Soul of His Work

Baldevia eloquently describes his creative philosophy: “As a Negrense visual artist and image-maker, my work delves into the depths of human behavior, emotion, relationships, and the indomitable spirit of survival. Growing up and residing in the vibrant City of Silay, I strive to capture the essence of my homeland and beyond, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry and the resilience of the people I photograph.”

A Legacy of Cultural Narratives

Aeson Baldevia stands as a beacon of artistic excellence, capturing the essence of Negrense heritage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary photography. His works serve as both a celebration and preservation of stories that deserve to be told. As he continues to explore new creative horizons, his contributions will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on both local and global art communities.
