Erica Harris is a Casablanca-based, artist who uses acrylic paint to make geometric, and fluid art, abstract canvases. She is a niqab-wearing, converted, Orthodox, Muslim woman of Afro-Caribbean and American ancestry. She was born and raised in Toronto's West End. Her work centers on the psyche, the chaos of our innermost selves and the social masks we wear to conceal our inner turmoil so we can function in society.

ARTIST STATEMENT: I use acrylic pouring and freehand painting to represent the irrational, yet intuitive and guiding, part of the human spirit. The preference for bright colours comes from my Caribbean background and the years spent in its colourful environs as a child. It is also linked to my experience and expressions of Negritude as a daughter of the African diaspora. I often measure and use geometric tools to place shapes on the canvas. I want the viewer to see and sense the tension by contrasting frenzied elements with orderly ones. I developed a great love of Art Deco and Brutalist architecture in my years photographing Toronto, Paris and most recently Casablanca. My main subject matter was the urban environment, with a particular focus on architecture and gentrification. Although acrylic painting is now my primary medium, my previous work in photography has had a major influence on my current work.
